Compact controller for networked machine control

Allen-Bradley 5069-L310ER CompactLogix 5380 Standard Controller

1 MB memory, eight local I/O modules and 24 EtherNet/IP nodes.

01

Product Description

A compact control platform for smaller networked machines, the Allen-Bradley 5069-L310ER offers 1 MB user memory with capacity for eight local Compact 5000 I/O modules.

The controller manages up to 24 EtherNet/IP nodes through two 1 Gb ports and provides a USB 2.0 Type-B connection for temporary local programming and maintenance.

Because 5069-L310ER is a standard, non-motion catalog, selection should be based on logic, local I/O and network capacity rather than an expectation of integrated motion axes.

Local Programming Ports

Use USB only for temporary engineering access

  • The front USB 2.0 Type-B port operates at 12 Mb/s for local programming, firmware and diagnostic work.
  • Keep the USB cable at or below 3 m and connect directly; hubs are not part of the documented connection.
  • USB is not intended as a permanent control or production communication link.
  • Use the Ethernet ports for the operating controller network and reserve USB for attended maintenance.
04

Linear and DLR Network Topology

Choose the port mode before wiring the machine

  • In linear or Device Level Ring mode, both embedded ports participate in the same network path.
  • A DLR design needs a correctly configured ring supervisor and a complete ring so a single cable break can be detected and recovered.
  • Dual-IP uses separate network identities and must not be treated as an unmanaged bridge.
  • Keep the complete controller project within the 24-node limit after adapters, drives, HMIs and other configured devices are counted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can 5069-L310ER run integrated motion after a firmware upgrade?

No; integrated motion capability is determined by the controller catalog, not added by firmware. Select an ERM catalog when coordinated integrated drive axes are part of the application.

Why is Studio 5000 unable to reach 5069-L310ER over USB?

Use a direct USB 2.0 Type-B cable no longer than 3 m and confirm that the controller is powered and the local driver is available. Remove any USB hub and treat the connection as temporary local access.

What happens if 5069-L310ER is connected to two switches while still in linear/DLR mode?

Both ports belong to the same configured topology, so an unintended loop can be created if the surrounding network is not designed for DLR. Confirm the port mode and ring supervision before closing the second path.

How should the 24-node limit of 5069-L310ER be counted?

Count EtherNet/IP devices added to the controller I/O configuration, including communication adapters and drives. Do not confuse physical switch ports or unconfigured engineering computers with configured controller nodes.

Can 5069-L310ER carry more than eight I/O modules directly beside it?

No; its local Compact 5000 I/O bank is limited to eight modules. Use distributed I/O over EtherNet/IP when more points are required and include the added adapter in the node budget.

Why does 5069-L310ER communicate locally but not through the plant network?

A direct USB session bypasses the Ethernet addressing and topology, so it can succeed while IP settings are wrong. Check port mode, IP address, subnet, gateway and any DLR or managed-switch configuration from the controller display and project.
