Expansion Unit Overview

Allen-Bradley 1745-E101 is a basic I/O expansion unit for the SLC 100 and SLC 150 programmable-controller systems. It extends the controller I/O path with sixteen additional discrete points and can participate in a system containing up to 112 I/O points.

The sixteen points on 1745-E101 are organized as ten 85–132 V AC inputs and six hard-contact outputs for 10–250 V AC or 10–125 V DC circuits. The expansion unit accepts 85–132 V AC or 170–265 V AC incoming power at 50/60 Hz and has a 12 VA maximum power requirement.

Each input circuit in 1745-E101 includes optical isolation, filtering and surge suppression. The input filter delay is 10–25 ms, the electrical-to-optical isolation rating is 1500 V, and the specified maximum off-state leakage current is 2 mA.

SYSTEM INTEGRATION

Expansion Address Block Allocation

One complete block

1745-E101 uses one complete SLC address block for its ten inputs and six outputs.

Seven-block system

The SLC address space contains seven blocks, each organized as ten input addresses and six output addresses.

Mixed expansion chain

An SLC 100 basic expansion unit can occupy an available block in either an SLC 100 or SLC 150 expansion arrangement.

DIAGNOSTIC INDICATION

Local Status and Power Diagnostics

The expansion faceplate separates power status from individual input and output states.1745-E101

1745-E101 has a green DC POWER indicator, ten red input indicators and six red output indicators.

  • Each input indicator corresponds to terminals 1E through 10E and lights when that input circuit is energized.
  • Each output indicator corresponds to terminals 11E through 16E and lights when its programmed output instruction is true.
  • If line voltage is present while DC POWER remains off, the input power fuse can be the open element.
FIELD QUESTIONS

Installation Questions

What does 1745-E101 add to an SLC system?+

It adds 16 points: ten 85–132 V AC inputs and six hard-contact outputs.

Can 1745-E101 be added without checking the existing I/O count?+

No. The complete SLC 100/150 system must remain within 112 I/O points and the approved expansion arrangement.

Why can 1745-E101 inputs ignore a very short pulse?+

The AC input filter is specified at 10–25 ms, so a pulse shorter than the filter and scan path may not be recognized reliably.

What fuse is specified for 1745-E101 control power?+

The manual lists a 315 mA, 250 V fuse. Replacement must preserve the specified type and safe isolation procedure.

How should inductive loads be connected to 1745-E101 outputs?+

Use suitable suppression at the load, respect contact ratings and keep field energy from being discharged through unprotected relay contacts.

Does 1745-E101 need an enclosure?+

Yes. It is industrial open-type equipment and should be installed in a suitable enclosure with wiring access, grounding and environmental protection.
