Entry Compact GuardLogix controller for SIL 2 applications

Allen-Bradley 5069-L306ERS2 Compact GuardLogix 5380 SIL 2 Safety Controller

0.6 MB standard memory, 0.3 MB safety memory and eight local I/O modules.

01

Product Description

When a compact machine needs standard control and a SIL 2 safety task in one project, the Allen-Bradley 5069-L306ERS2 provides 0.6 MB standard memory and 0.3 MB safety memory.

The controller supports eight local Compact 5000 I/O modules and up to 16 EtherNet/IP nodes. Safety and standard logic share the hardware while remaining separated by the GuardLogix task and safety signatures.

The 5069-L306ERS2 uses dual 1 Gb Ethernet ports and the same horizontal DIN-rail envelope as the broader 5380 family, but its SIL 2 capability and smaller capacity make project sizing especially important.

SIL 2 Safety Task Design

Keep safety execution inside the certified task

  • Place safety routines in the safety task and use supported safety instructions for the required protective functions.
  • Standard logic can exchange permitted data with the safety side, but it cannot bypass safety ownership or validation.
  • Apply a safety signature after validation and control access to changes that would invalidate it.
  • Size both 0.6 MB standard and 0.3 MB safety memory; one cannot be substituted for the other.
04

Safety I/O and Reaction Path

Trace the complete protective function from input to final element

  • Include sensor response, network transport, safety-task execution, output reaction and actuator stopping behavior in the safety calculation.
  • Configure supported safety I/O over EtherNet/IP and confirm every device belongs to the intended safety connection.
  • The dimensional figure helps reserve enclosure space, but clearance and cable routing still need to be added.
  • Validate the final protective function on the installed machine rather than relying only on controller certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can standard logic directly reset a safety fault in 5069-L306ERS2?

A reset must follow the validated safety strategy and cannot defeat the protective function. Use supported safety logic, operator action and restart interlocks so a reset does not create unexpected machine motion.

Why does 5069-L306ERS2 show free standard memory but reject more safety logic?

Standard and safety memory are separate allocations of 0.6 MB and 0.3 MB. Reduce or reorganize safety content, or select a larger safety controller; unused standard memory cannot be reassigned to the safety task.

How are 16 EtherNet/IP nodes counted for 5069-L306ERS2?

Count devices configured in the controller I/O tree, including safety adapters and other EtherNet/IP modules. Safety status does not exempt a device from the controller node limit.

Can 5069-L306ERS2 be used for a SIL 3 machine function?

This catalog is the SIL 2 member and is specified up to SIL 2/PLd Category 3. Select and validate an architecture explicitly rated for the required SIL 3/PLe function rather than extending this controller beyond its rating.

Why does a replacement 5069-L306ERS2 remain safety-locked after the project is downloaded?

Safety ownership, keys, signatures and firmware must agree with the validated project state. Follow the controlled replacement procedure and revalidate the safety function before returning the machine to service.

What power source is appropriate for 5069-L306ERS2 MOD power?

Use an 18…32 V DC SELV/PELV source sized for the 475 mA maximum demand and startup behavior. Keep SA field-power calculations separate for the attached I/O bank.
