For larger 240 V motor loads, Allen-Bradley 22B-B012N104 and 22B-B017N104 are PowerFlex 40 AC drives that accept three-phase line power and produce adjustable three-phase output for induction motors. Both mount in a control panel as the motor-speed-control stage, with applications including pumps, fans, conveyors, machine tools and material-handling systems.
Commands for 22B-B012N104 and 22B-B017N104 can originate at the keypad, hardwired start/stop and programmable inputs, isolated analog references or the integral RS-485 DSI port. The drive applies sensorless-vector or V/Hz control to the rectifier/DC-bus/inverter power path, while a Form C relay, two opto outputs and one analog output report drive, motor or logic conditions to the surrounding control system.
Networked operation of 22B-B012N104 and 22B-B017N104 can use the integral RS-485 port with an RTU master or add a PowerFlex communication adapter for another supported industrial network. Node address, data rate, message format, communication-loss time and loss action define how the drive reacts to the serial path, while the selected motor load and branch circuit still determine which of the two shared-control models is installed.

The integral DSI port can place multiple PowerFlex drives on an RTU network while preserving a separate node address and command state for each unit.
A controller that supports the standard 03 and 06 RTU commands can communicate with the drives directly. A serial converter module provides the alternate DF1-to-DSI connection path.
Up to 31 drives can share the RS-485 multi-drop line under the documented RTU arrangement. Each drive requires its own address and the physical line needs the specified end termination.
The RS-485 shield terminal is bonded to protective earth. The serial wiring remains separate from motor and input-power conductors to limit coupled electrical noise.
The internal brake transistor gives regenerated motor energy a controlled route from the DC bus to an external resistor during configured deceleration.
A decelerating motor can return energy to the DC bus. When bus conditions call for braking, the internal transistor switches that energy into the resistor circuit.
The resistor connects at the braking terminals and must satisfy the minimum resistance and duty requirement for the drive rating. It is not an internal load supplied with the drive.
The braking path works beside the DC-bus overvoltage protection rather than replacing it. Incorrect resistance or excessive duty can still produce a bus or braking fault.
22B-B012N104 is the 12.0 A, 2.2 kW unit and 22B-B017N104 is the 17.5 A, 3.7 kW unit. The common frame preserves the outline, not the branch, motor or thermal rating.
The documented RS-485 arrangement supports as many as 31 PowerFlex 4 or PowerFlex 40 drives on one RTU multi-drop network. Unique node addressing and correct termination are required.
It connects to the drive's braking/DC-bus terminal path used by the internal brake transistor. The resistor value and duty must match the exact drive rating.
The Start Source and Speed Reference parameters decide which command paths are active. Wiring an input does not override a parameter that assigns control to another source.
All ratings use fan cooling and the IP20 open-type ambient limit is -10…50 °C. The cabinet must allow the cooling path to operate within that surrounding-air range.
The display group exposes output frequency, current, voltage, DC-bus voltage, drive status, control source, input state and recent fault codes. These read-only values can be checked before changing a parameter.
