Providing adjustable-speed control for a three-phase induction motor, Allen-Bradley 22B-A5P0N104 is a PowerFlex 40 AC drive supplied from a 200…240 V single-phase circuit. The drive sits in the motor power path and converts the fixed-frequency incoming supply into variable-frequency, variable-voltage output for a 0.75 kW / 1 HP motor.
The command path through 22B-A5P0N104 can begin at the integral keypad, the hardwired control terminals or the RS-485 DSI communication port. Sensorless-vector or V/Hz logic processes the selected start source and speed reference, applies the programmed acceleration, deceleration, current limit and stop mode, and then controls the IGBT inverter; relay, opto and analog outputs return operating status to surrounding equipment.
When 22B-A5P0N104 decelerates a motor, the internal brake transistor can switch energy from the DC bus into a correctly selected external braking resistor instead of leaving the bus to rise unchecked. Electronic overload modelling uses the programmed motor current, and stored fault codes distinguish detected overload, bus and output conditions from a missing run command; the N104 construction therefore combines the braking switch and diagnostic functions but still relies on the panel for environmental protection.

The PowerFlex 40 control algorithm estimates motor behaviour without a shaft encoder and adjusts the output to maintain useful torque through a broad speed range.
Autotune data lets the sensorless-vector algorithm adapt to the connected motor characteristics. The resulting model improves current regulation and torque production compared with a fixed V/Hz profile.
Variable PWM allows additional output current at low frequencies. Slip compensation corrects the commanded frequency as motor load changes.
Volts-per-hertz remains available when the application calls for a simpler frequency-to-voltage relationship. The selected control method belongs to the commissioned motor data.
Protection combines motor thermal modelling with drive-level detection of excessive current, bus voltage and output faults.
The electronic motor-overload model allows 150% for 60 seconds and 200% for 3 seconds. The motor nameplate current setting anchors that calculation.
Hardware overcurrent protection acts at 200%, with an instantaneous fault at 300%. Ground-fault and phase-to-phase short-circuit detection monitor the drive output.
Overvoltage and undervoltage thresholds monitor the internal bus against the 240 V input class. A trip removes the motor output and records the applicable fault code for diagnosis.
Sensorless Vector Control uses motor data and current feedback to regulate torque without an encoder. V/Hz control remains available as a separate operating method.
The drive uses a Class 10 electronic overload model referenced to the programmed motor current. Its intermittent capability is 150% for one minute and 200% for three seconds.
Yes. The N104 construction includes the internal brake IGBT. A compatible external resistor forms the energy-dissipation path when dynamic braking is used.
The Start Source parameter selects the keypad, two-wire terminals, three-wire terminals or communication port. The wiring and parameter choice must describe the same command method.
The display group retains codes for recent drive faults. Those codes identify the detected condition and separate an overload, bus or output fault from a missing command.
The standard N104 unit is IP20 open type. The completed installation must provide the environmental protection and access control required by the panel.
A wide supplier network and an extensive automation-parts range support enquiries for both commonly used and difficult-to-find components. Moore Automation also provides order follow-up, secure packing and international shipping options without presenting itself as the equipment manufacturer.
