KINETIX 5700 · HIGH-CURRENT SINGLE-AXIS INVERTERS

Allen-Bradley 2198-S160-ERS4 / 2198-S263-ERS4 Kinetix 5700 single-axis inverter with ERS4 safety

480 V DC BUS160 / 263 A PEAK

Product Description

Allen-Bradley 2198-S160-ERS4 / 2198-S263-ERS4 are high-current Kinetix 5700 single-axis inverter modules with ERS4 safety capability. They provide the motor-side conversion stage for larger machine axes within the shared Kinetix 5700 drive platform.

Allen-Bradley 2198-S160-ERS4 / 2198-S263-ERS4 extend the Kinetix 5700 common-bus platform into two high-current inverter positions. The exact model stays bound to its cabinet location, axis assignment and safety project, enabling the larger machine channel to be traced from bus hardware through the motor branch.

High-Current Cabinet Integration

The two inverter bodies require different cabinet preparation even though they share the same system architecture and safety family.

STEP 01

Mechanical bay

Assign the physical bay from the selected module drawing before locating adjacent bus hardware or cable entry points.

STEP 02

Power-cable route

Route the bus and motor conductors with service access and separation from feedback and network cables.

STEP 03

Cooling path

Keep the module ventilation path and neighboring clearances open so cabinet airflow is not blocked by cables or adjacent hardware.

Safety and Feedback Separation

Safety commands, ordinary motion commands and motor feedback are three independent information paths that meet at the inverter.

STEP 01

Safety control

Deliver the ERS4 safety command from the configured safety controller and validate the drive response at the correct axis.

STEP 02

Motion control

Carry ordinary motion commands through the controller connection without using the safety channel as the axis command path.

STEP 03

Feedback confirmation

Verify that the feedback connector reports the motor assigned to that inverter before completing the safety validation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should 2198-S160-ERS4 / 2198-S263-ERS4 be separated in the DC-bus layout?

Assign the inverter location by its actual width and current class. S160 is 100 mm wide and S263 is 220 mm wide, so the mechanical assembly cannot be copied from one model to the other.

What current check is required for 2198-S160-ERS4 / 2198-S263-ERS4?

Use 85 A rms continuous and 160 A rms peak for S160, or 150 A rms continuous and 263 A rms peak for S263. These figures determine the correct motor and bus-current evaluation.

Which safety capabilities are associated with 2198-S160-ERS4 / 2198-S263-ERS4?

Both ERS4 inverter variants provide Safe Torque Off, Safe Stop 1 and safe monitoring. Preserve the complete catalog number and ERS4 suffix in the system configuration so the safety variant remains identifiable.

How does bus capacitance differ for 2198-S160-ERS4 / 2198-S263-ERS4?

S160 has 1120 µF internal capacitance and S263 has 2050 µF. Use the value for the actual module when evaluating the common DC-bus arrangement.

What cabinet heat values apply to 2198-S160-ERS4 / 2198-S263-ERS4?

At 100% rating, S160 is rated at 950 W dissipation and S263 at 1529 W. These values should be entered separately in the enclosure thermal calculation.

What control supply is needed for 2198-S160-ERS4 / 2198-S263-ERS4?

Each inverter requires a 24 V DC control supply in addition to the 276...747 V DC bus supply. Keep the control-power wiring distinct from the DC-bus connection and motor-output circuit.
