Product Description

The Allen-Bradley 2198-S130-ERS3 / 2198-S263-ERS3 pair represents high-current single-axis Kinetix 5700 inverter modules with integrated CIP Safety. A shared-system dc bus enters each module and one three-phase output drives one motor; 2198-S130-ERS3 supplies 65 A rms continuous with a 130 A peak class, while 2198-S263-ERS3 increases the continuous rating to 150 A and the peak class to 263 A.

Control and protection remain layered in 2198-S130-ERS3 / 2198-S263-ERS3: the dc bus supplies motor energy, 24 V supports electronics, the feedback connector returns rotor data, EtherNet/IP carries motion and diagnostic traffic, and the ERS3 safety connection carries supported CIP Safety functions. The larger 2198-S263-ERS3 uses a wider power module and heavier conductor arrangement, so electrical and mechanical replacement planning cannot be based on the shared family name alone.

Single-Axis DC-Bus Power Conversion

2198-S130-ERS3 / 2198-S263-ERS3 convert a common Kinetix 5700 dc bus into one high-current, feedback-regulated motor output.

Current-step selection

The 65/130 A and 150/263 A continuous/peak classes are matched to motor torque, acceleration demand and the duration of overload events.

One feedback loop

A single motor-power connector and feedback path keep all output current and position control assigned to one axis instead of splitting capacity across two motors.

Regeneration to common bus

Deceleration energy returns through the inverter to the shared dc bus, where the system supply and regenerative or shunt hardware handle it.

CIP Safety and High-Current Integration

The ERS3 design of 2198-S130-ERS3 / 2198-S263-ERS3 places the safety connection on EtherNet/IP while high-current power conductors remain on dedicated terminals.

Safety ownership

The safety controller establishes the supported CIP Safety connection and monitors function status separately from the ordinary motion controller commands.

High-current conductor planning

The 150 A module uses a substantially wider frame and conductor arrangement, requiring its own cabinet, busbar and termination review.

Validated motor data

Motor identity, feedback type, current limits and safety configuration must all match the installed catalog number before torque is enabled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do 2198-S130-ERS3 / 2198-S263-ERS3 use very different module widths?

The S263 150 A continuous stage and 263 A peak class require larger power semiconductors, conductors and thermal structure. Its 220 mm frame therefore needs a different cabinet and busbar allocation from the 85 mm S130.

Can 2198-S130-ERS3 / 2198-S263-ERS3 share a dc bus with dual-axis modules?

They can participate in a correctly designed Kinetix 5700 common-bus system. The power supply, bus links, fusing, total capacitance and regeneration path must be sized for every attached inverter.

Why can 2198-S130-ERS3 / 2198-S263-ERS3 communicate while motor voltage is absent?

Control power and Ethernet can remain active without a valid dc bus or with the safety function demanding torque removal. Check bus status, contactor state, safety connection and axis enable independently.

What must be reviewed before moving between 2198-S130-ERS3 / 2198-S263-ERS3?

Review frame width, current capacity, bus structure, cabling, motor compatibility, heat loss and controller configuration. The larger module is not a direct physical or electrical swap merely because both use ERS3.

How should CIP Safety faults be diagnosed on 2198-S130-ERS3 / 2198-S263-ERS3?

Separate network ownership, safety signature, configured function and proof-test results from normal motion diagnostics. A healthy standard Ethernet connection does not prove the safety connection is valid.

Why is peak current not a continuous rating for 2198-S130-ERS3 / 2198-S263-ERS3?

Peak current is available for a limited acceleration interval and is constrained by thermal and duty-cycle limits. Continuous torque selection must use 65 A or 150 A rms and the application’s average load.
