Product Description

The Allen-Bradley 2198-D020-ERS4 / 2198-D057-ERS4 combination compares two higher-current Kinetix 5700 dual-axis advanced-safety inverters. The D020 supplies 8 A rms continuous per axis with a 20 A peak class, whereas the D057 raises each channel to 23 A rms continuous and 57.5 A peak; both retain two independently controlled motor outputs in one module.

A common Kinetix 5700 dc bus feeds 2198-D020-ERS4 / 2198-D057-ERS4, and 24 V control power supports electronics, feedback processing, network communication and status. Axis commands and diagnostics enter over EtherNet/IP, adaptive tuning operates on the configured motor and load response, and the ERS4 safety connection supervises advanced safety functions independently of the normal motion program.

Higher-Current Axis Coordination

2198-D020-ERS4 / 2198-D057-ERS4 coordinate two motor channels whose simultaneous acceleration, regeneration and thermal duty all load the same module and dc bus.

Continuous-versus-peak choice

The 8/20 A and 23/57.5 A current steps must be checked against motor continuous torque, acceleration current and the duration of repeated peaks.

Combined bus demand

Two axes can draw or return energy at once, so the power-supply and capacitor system is sized from the overlapping motion cycle rather than either motor alone.

Channel-specific cabling

Each motor and feedback pair stays on its assigned A or B interface; swapping only one side creates feedback-to-power mismatches during commissioning.

Adaptive Tuning and Fault Response

The control and diagnostic functions of 2198-D020-ERS4 / 2198-D057-ERS4 use measured motor response and axis-specific status to separate load behavior from wiring or safety faults.

Load-observer adjustment

Adaptive tuning can compensate for load inertia and resonant behavior after the correct motor feedback and mechanical system are identified.

Fault localization

Axis codes distinguish feedback loss, motor-power conditions, following error and common bus events, guiding checks to one channel or the shared supply.

Thermal coordination

Current limits, module temperature and duty-cycle data work together; a repeated thermal trip requires review of both axes and enclosure cooling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is 2198-D020-ERS4 / 2198-D057-ERS4 selected when both axes accelerate together?

Sum the time-aligned power and dc-bus demand of both motion profiles, then check continuous, peak and regeneration limits. Selecting only from each motor’s standalone current can undersize the shared system.

Why does 2198-D020-ERS4 / 2198-D057-ERS4 report a bus fault on both axes?

The two inverters share the dc-bus connection, so a supply, precharge, overvoltage or regenerative-energy event can appear as a common condition. Inspect the power-supply and shunt path before troubleshooting both motors independently.

What should be compared before moving between 2198-D020-ERS4 / 2198-D057-ERS4?

Compare current, power, dc-bus demand, heat loss, conductor requirements and physical module data. The controller and safety project must also use the replacement catalog number and validated configuration.

Can adaptive tuning fix incorrect feedback wiring on 2198-D020-ERS4 / 2198-D057-ERS4?

No. Tuning assumes correct motor identity, phase wiring and feedback polarity. Resolve wiring and commutation faults before using observer or bandwidth adjustments.

Why can 2198-D020-ERS4 / 2198-D057-ERS4 overheat below its peak current?

Peak current is time-limited and does not define continuous thermal capacity. Repeated acceleration on two axes, high ambient temperature or restricted airflow can exceed the module’s average loss limit.

How are safety and motion faults separated on 2198-D020-ERS4 / 2198-D057-ERS4?

Read the axis fault, safety connection status and controller safety diagnostics together. A safety demand can correctly remove torque even when feedback, network link and normal motion configuration remain healthy.
