RS-232 ASCII data exchange for POINT I/O

Allen-Bradley 1734-232ASC POINT I/O RS-232 ASCII Interface Module

One full-duplex serial channel with configurable record framing and DeviceNet data exchange.

01

Product Description

Built to bring serial instruments into a distributed I/O station, the Allen-Bradley 1734-232ASC provides one full-duplex RS-232 channel for ASCII devices. It exchanges delimited serial records with a DeviceNet master while remaining only 12.1 mm wide in the POINT I/O row.

Receive and transmit records can contain 1…128 characters, and framing choices cover common 7-bit and 8-bit formats at 1200…38.4 kbit/s. Separate TXD and RXD indicators make activity visible at the module face.

For a dependable 1734-232ASC installation, the external 24 V DC supply, signal ground and RS-232 terminals must follow the terminal map, and the selected 1734 wiring base must match the mechanical key position.

Serial Device Wiring Map

Land TX, RX and signal ground by terminal number

  • Use TX from the module to the receiving terminal of the serial device and return the device transmit line to RX.
  • Reference both signals to SG; reverse TX/RX wiring is a common cause of transmit activity without received data.
  • The module accepts 1734-TB, 1734-TBS, 1734-TOP or 1734-TOPS wiring bases and uses keyswitch position 2.
  • Remove field and system power before changing terminal-base wiring.

ASCII Record Handling & Buffer Limits

Configure framing around the actual instrument message

  • Choose one supported character format, then match baud rate, parity, data bits and stop bits at both ends.
  • Start and end delimiters can be included, excluded or disabled, allowing the module to separate continuous serial traffic into records.
  • Produced and consumed assemblies range from 4…132 bytes while the serial payload remains 0…128 bytes.
  • TX/RX FIFO overflow, parity and handshake status bits help distinguish formatting errors from physical-wiring faults.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does 1734-232ASC show transmit activity but never receive the instrument reply?

Confirm that module TX is connected to the device receive input, module RX is connected to the device transmit output, and both sides share the documented signal ground. Then match baud rate and character framing, because correct wiring cannot compensate for a parity or stop-bit mismatch.

Can 1734-232ASC collect a message longer than 128 characters in one record?

No; one configured receive record is limited to 128 characters. Change the device message format or split the transaction into smaller records, and verify that the produced assembly is large enough for the selected payload.

Which terminal base should be ordered with 1734-232ASC?

The module can use 1734-TB, 1734-TBS, 1734-TOP or 1734-TOPS. Select removable versus one-piece construction and screw versus spring terminals to suit the panel wiring practice, while preserving keyswitch position 2.

Why does 1734-232ASC return parity or framing faults after replacement?

A replacement can retain different communication parameters from the attached instrument. Compare the exact 7/8-bit, parity and stop-bit format plus baud rate, then clear the fault only after both endpoints match.

Does 1734-232ASC obtain all operating power from the POINTBus?

No; it draws POINTBus current and also requires an external 10…28.8 V DC supply for the serial interface. Verify both sources and their common reference before treating a silent port as a configuration problem.

How should intermittent 1734-232ASC records be diagnosed around motors or drives?

Use shielded Category 2 communication wiring and separate the cable from high-energy conductors according to the panel routing rules. Check grounding, connector tightness and RX/TX status while the noisy load switches so the disturbance can be tied to a physical event.
