Triconex 8131X Tricon CX I/O Expansion Chassis

192-POINT I/O FRAME
01

Product Introduction

Triconex 8131X is the I/O expansion chassis for the Tricon CX safety system. It accepts up to six logical pairs of I/O modules and provides the backplane, interface position and field-termination locations needed to exchange as many as 192 points with the 8120X main chassis. Its main responsibility is to organize I/O modules and their bus connection outside the central processor frame.

At the left side of Triconex 8131X, a 4701X or 4703X interface module receives the copper or fiber I/O-bus path and passes processor traffic onto the expansion backplane. Each numbered logical slot contains two module positions associated with the same field-point group, so the bus address combines the chassis number, logical slot and left/right position when the processors identify installed hardware.

Two external 24 V DC sources feed Triconex 8131X through redundant chassis terminals and power the interface and I/O electronics. Field conductors do not land on the removable modules; FET connectors behind the module positions and interface cables carry the point circuits to external termination panels. The chassis address plug sets the expansion number used by the processors when they exchange those point values over the I/O bus.

Operating Characteristics - Expansion Chassis Operation

Product-specific focus

8131X concentrates six logical I/O positions, redundant power and a selectable copper or fiber bus interface in one expansion frame.

Logical-slot pairing

Each logical slot accepts a primary and hot-spare I/O-module position associated with the same field-point group.

Addressed bus node

The address plug sets chassis numbers 1 through 15 so the main processors can identify each expansion frame on the I/O bus.

Interface selection

A 4701X provides the serial copper path, while a 4703X provides the fiber IOP-bus path and serial output.

04

Diagnostics and Protection - Expansion Chassis Status

8131X exposes redundant supply, alarm and installed-module states without combining them into one undifferentiated fault indication.

Power indication

Separate Power 1 and Power 2 indicators show whether each 24 V DC feed is within limits.

Chassis alarm

Redundant isolated alarm contacts report a chassis-level condition to external wiring.

Module and point status

Each installed I/O module retains its own pass, fault, active and point indicators for locating the source of the chassis alarm.

Product Q&A

How many I/O modules fit in 8131X?

The chassis accepts up to six primary/hot-spare pairs. Actual point capacity depends on the installed module types, with a maximum of 192 points.

Which interface module connects 8131X to the I/O bus?

Use a 4701X IMSS for the copper serial path or a 4703X IMFF for the supported fiber path. Cable media and distance must follow that choice.

How is the address for 8131X assigned?

A chassis address plug sets an expansion number from 1 through 15. The physical plug and project configuration must agree.

Where does field wiring terminate for 8131X?

Field conductors land on compatible external termination panels. FET connectors and interface cables link those panels to the selected I/O-module positions.

Can 8131X operate from one 24 V DC source?

The chassis is designed for redundant sources and normal operation shares the load. A supply-loss condition changes the power calculation because the remaining source carries the full chassis load.

What clearance should be reserved below 8131X?

The rack arrangement requires space for cables and airflow, including the stated lower clearance to equipment or the cabinet floor. Do not use chassis dimensions alone for enclosure sizing.
