Triconex 4701X / 4703X are I/O-bus interface modules for the 8131X Tricon CX I/O expansion chassis. The 4701X is the serial-to-serial IMSS, and the 4703X is the fiber-to-fiber IMFF. Each module occupies the interface position at the left of the expansion chassis and carries the processor I/O-bus path into the chassis backplane before forwarding that path to the next supported segment.
On Triconex 4701X / 4703X, the connector roles follow the selected medium. The 4701X receives and retransmits the RS-485 I/O bus through shielded copper RJ-45 ports. The 4703X receives the IOP bus through an SFP fiber input, can forward it through a fiber output, and also provides an RS-485 serial output for the next copper segment. The incoming and outgoing cables must therefore be assigned by port function rather than by connector appearance alone.
Distance and grounding are linked to the media choice on Triconex 4701X / 4703X. A 4701X copper segment remains within the specified 30 m limit and preserves an electrical path between chassis, whereas 4703X fiber reach follows the matched SFP pair and removes the conductive bus connection across that optical segment. The interface selection consequently defines both the cable set and the way consecutive expansion chassis are joined.

4701X / 4703X move the TMR I/O-bus path through an expansion chassis, with the selected physical medium setting the usable segment length.
A 4701X copper segment runs through the RJ-45 input and output and is limited to the specified 30 m cable length.
A 4703X receives and forwards the IOP bus through matched SFP modules, allowing the fiber reach to follow the selected optical pair.
The interface module reports the expansion-chassis alarm state while passing I/O-bus traffic between chassis sections.
4701X / 4703X present different media without changing the I/O modules installed in the 8131X chassis.
4701X uses industrial CAT6 copper for both incoming and outgoing serial I/O-bus connections.
4703X provides fiber input and fiber output plus a copper serial output for the next supported bus segment.
Separate pass, fault, alarm, power and transmit/receive indicators make the bus and chassis state visible at the interface position.
Choose 4701X for an all-copper short I/O-bus segment and 4703X when the design requires a fiber IOP-bus path. The chassis and downstream cabling must match the selected interface.
No. The copper ports require the specified shielded industrial CAT6 cable, while the 4703X fiber ports require supported SFPs and matching optical fiber.
Record each copper and fiber segment separately. Copper is limited to 30 m, while fiber reach depends on the supported SFP pair and optical medium.
A copper I/O-bus link extends the electrical grounding relationship between chassis. Fiber breaks that conductive path, so the grounding plan differs with the media choice.
The interface module's alarm indicator reflects an asserted chassis alarm from installed I/O hardware. It should be read together with the individual I/O-module and power indicators.
Not necessarily. For 4703X, the required SFP type and quantity should be stated separately with wavelength, fiber type and distance.
MOORE AUTOMATION
https://www.mvme.cn/Moore Automation records the exact I/O-bus interface, port medium, SFP requirement and requested quantity before quotation. This keeps a copper 4701X request separate from a fiber 4703X request even when both are intended for the same 8131X chassis.
