Expanded memory, nodes and integrated motion

Allen-Bradley 5069-L350ERM High-capacity CompactLogix 5380 Motion Controller

5 MB memory, 31 local I/O modules, 120 nodes and 24 drive axes.

01

Product Description

At the upper end of the CompactLogix 5380 motion range, the Allen-Bradley 5069-L350ERM provides 5 MB user memory and capacity for 24 integrated motion drive axes.

A local bank can include up to 31 Compact 5000 I/O modules, while the EtherNet/IP configuration can reach 120 nodes. Dual 1 Gb ports support linear, DLR and Dual-IP arrangements for machine and plant connectivity.

The larger 5069-L350ERM capacity does not remove the need for node, connection, task and network-load planning; each limit must be checked against the actual project architecture.

High-capacity Motion Coordination

Scale motion without losing the network budget

  • The 24-axis allowance applies to integrated motion drive axes configured to the controller.
  • Reserve network bandwidth and node count for every drive, adapter and supervisory device instead of sizing only by axis total.
  • Use synchronized EtherNet/IP design for coordinated groups and validate requested update rates before commissioning.
  • Partition programs, motion groups and diagnostic routines within the 5 MB user-memory boundary.
04

Memory, Node & I/O Scale

Balance three independent capacity ceilings

  • Up to 31 local I/O modules can sit in the controller bank, but distributed adapters add to the 120-node EtherNet/IP limit.
  • The 5 MB memory figure covers application content and should include margin for online edits, tags and future sequences.
  • Network topology diagrams show how controllers, drives, HMIs and I/O adapters can share linear or ring paths.
  • A project is only within capacity when memory, local modules, nodes and motion axes all remain inside their own limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a 5069-L350ERM project reach a limit before all 120 network nodes are used?

Memory, connections, local I/O and motion axes are separate resources, so any one can become the first constraint. Review the controller properties and project statistics instead of using the node count as a universal capacity figure.

Can 5069-L350ERM coordinate 24 axes through ordinary unmanaged switches?

The axis count does not guarantee suitable timing through every network design. Validate time synchronization, switch behavior, requested packet intervals and the complete traffic path for the motion application.

How should 31 local modules on 5069-L350ERM be powered?

Calculate MOD and SA demand for the controller and every module segment, including inrush and field loads. Use the required power-distribution modules when the bank must be segmented rather than feeding the entire row from an undersized source.

Does Dual-IP on 5069-L350ERM double the 120-node controller limit?

No; Dual-IP separates network identities and traffic paths but does not create a second controller capacity allocation. Count all configured EtherNet/IP nodes against the controller limit.

Why is extra memory margin important on 5069-L350ERM even when the initial project downloads?

Online edits, added tags, trends and future machine sequences consume memory after initial commissioning. Leave deliberate headroom so a maintenance change does not force an unplanned controller redesign.

Which checks matter before replacing a smaller 5380 controller with 5069-L350ERM?

Confirm firmware and project compatibility, module-bank arrangement, power, Ethernet mode and panel space before migration. The larger capacity does not automatically preserve every port setting or physical installation detail from the previous catalog.
