High-capacity GuardLogix 5580 safety processing
Allen-Bradley 1756-L85ES GuardLogix 5580 Safety Controller
40 MB standard memory, 3 MB safety memory and support for 300 EtherNet/IP nodes.
Product Description
High-capacity standard and safety control share one Logix project in the Allen-Bradley 1756-L85ES. The controller provides 40 MB standard memory, 3 MB safety memory and an embedded 1 Gb EtherNet/IP port.
Up to 300 EtherNet/IP nodes can be configured for large architectures. Used alone with the safety task and safety I/O, the GuardLogix 5580 platform supports SIL 2/PLd Category 3; a compatible 1756-L8SP safety partner is used for SIL 3/PLe Category 4 architectures.
The 1756-L85ES belongs in a ControlLogix chassis, so chassis power, slot planning, communication paths and the required safety-partner arrangement must be resolved together.

GuardLogix Safety Partner Architecture
Add 1756-L8SP when the validated design requires SIL 3
- A single GuardLogix 5580 controller can support SIL 2/PLd Category 3 with the safety task and safety I/O.
- For SIL 3/PLe Category 4, install the compatible 1756-L8SP safety partner in the required chassis relationship.
- The partner is configured as part of the system; selection must match the controller family and safety project.
- Validate the full sensor-to-actuator function after controller or partner replacement.
High-end Safety Processing
Use large memory and node capacity without hiding dependencies
- Allocate 40 MB standard and 3 MB safety memory independently and retain margin for online maintenance.
- The 300-node EtherNet/IP capacity supports broad architectures, but traffic, connections and reaction time still require engineering.
- Keep standard control, process supervision and safety ownership explicit inside the shared project.
- The architecture diagram shows GuardLogix systems with controllers, safety partners, I/O and networked devices.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does 1756-L85ES require a safety partner for every safety application?
No; a single GuardLogix 5580 controller with the safety task and safety I/O can be used up to SIL 2/PLd Category 3. A compatible 1756-L8SP partner is required when the validated architecture targets SIL 3/PLe Category 4.
Why can 1756-L85ES reach a connection or performance limit before 300 nodes?
The node figure is one controller limit, while connections, packet rates, task execution, memory and network loading impose others. Review the complete architecture and controller utilization rather than treating 300 as an unconditional device total.
Can a 1756-L85ES project use the 40 MB standard memory for safety routines?
No; the controller provides a separate 3 MB safety-memory allocation. Standard and safety content must fit their own budgets, and unused standard memory cannot be transferred to the safety task.
What must be verified when replacing 1756-L85ES in a SIL 3 chassis?
Confirm the exact controller and safety-partner catalogs, firmware compatibility, chassis slots, safety ownership and valid project signature. Perform the controlled replacement and revalidate every affected protective function.
Why is the embedded Ethernet port of 1756-L85ES reachable but remote safety I/O will not establish?
Basic IP communication does not confirm a valid safety connection. Check electronic keying, safety network identities, connection timing, device ownership and the validated safety configuration.
How should 1756-L85ES status information be captured during an intermittent shutdown?
Record the four-character display, controller indicators, safety status and network diagnostics before cycling power. Correlate that evidence with task and module logs so a transient network event is not mistaken for a controller failure.
