TRICON V11.X · Enhanced Performance Main Chassis
ENHANCED PERFORMANCE MAIN CHASSIS
Backplane, processor and communication-module mounting structure
The Triconex 8120E is an Enhanced Performance Main Chassis for Tricon v11.x controllers. It houses the three Main Processors, dual Power Modules, memory-backup batteries and the backplane buses that connect processor, I/O and communication positions inside the controller.
Across the backplane, the 8120E keeps the TriBus, I/O bus and communication bus as separate triplicated paths. With three 3009 Main Processors installed, the TriBus transfers and compares processor data at 1000 Mbps, while dual power rails feed the installed modules so one Power Module or rail can fail without removing the second supply path.
Module placement on the 8120E is divided between COM 1, COM 2 and five logical I/O or communication slots. COM 1 has one physical position, COM 2 and the five logical slots each have two positions, and Unified Communication Modules are restricted to COM 2.

The 8120E backplane separates processor voting, I/O transfer and communication traffic while distributing redundant power to the installed modules.
Three independent serial links synchronize the Main Processors, move I/O and diagnostic data, and compare output or memory data from the preceding scan.
The I/O bus links processor activity to the five logical module slots, while the communication bus serves the designated communication positions.
Two Power Modules feed separate rails, so either supply path can continue powering the chassis when the other path is unavailable.
The physical positions in 8120E follow the controller role assigned to each logical slot rather than forming one unrestricted module row.
Three dedicated positions keep the three Main Processors aligned with the triplicated controller architecture.
COM 1 provides one position for a TCM, whereas COM 2 provides two positions reserved for UCM installation.
Each I/O or communication logical slot contains left and right physical positions for an active module and its permitted paired position.
The 8120E is designed for Model 3009 Main Processors. The three 3009 modules use the chassis high-speed TriBus at 1000 Mbps. Using the specified processor set also avoids forcing a different MP generation into a chassis designed around 3009 hardware.
The 8120E accepts two Power Modules connected to dual power rails. A loss of one module or rail leaves the second power path available. Both supply positions should therefore be included when the required chassis power arrangement is reviewed.
No. UCMs must occupy COM 2 in the 8120E, while COM 1 is limited to the supported TCM position. The physical slot label should be checked before the communication module is inserted.
The 8120E provides five logical slots for I/O or communication modules. Each of those logical slots has two physical positions. Left and right physical positions belong to the same logical slot rather than adding five more logical addresses.
No. Its backplane carries separate TriBus, I/O bus and communication-bus systems, each serving a distinct data path. This separation lets processor voting, I/O transfer and communication traffic follow their own backplane routes.
Confirm whether the module belongs in COM 1, COM 2 or a permitted logical I/O slot. The UCM restriction to COM 2 makes the complete module model important before installation. The module model and the intended controller role should be confirmed together before slot assignment.
