TRICON V10.0 · Tricon Communication Module
COPPER ETHERNET COMMUNICATION MODULE
Two Ethernet ports, four serial ports and protocol routing
The Triconex 4351 is a Tricon Communication Module for Tricon v10.0 systems. It connects the controller to Ethernet hosts, TriStation, other Tricon or Trident controllers and Modbus devices through two copper network ports and four separately addressed serial ports.
Network traffic on the 4351 uses two 10/100BaseT RJ-45 interfaces, while its four DB-9 serial ports support RS-232 or RS-485. Serial port 1 can serve Modbus or Trimble GPS, and port 4 can serve Modbus or TriStation, separating time, engineering and device traffic by configured port role.
For Modbus access through the 4351, TriStation assigns a five-digit alias to each Tricon variable that an external device reads or writes. That alias connects the controller variable name to the Modbus message type and address, while the module's network and serial indicators show link and traffic activity.

The 4351 separates Ethernet sessions and serial device traffic across six configurable communication ports.
NET 1 and NET 2 are 10/100BaseT RJ-45 interfaces used by the protocols assigned to the original 4351 model.
DB-9 ports carry Modbus traffic, with port 1 also available for GPS and port 4 also available for TriStation.
Each serial port can run to 115.2 Kbps while the four-port total remains within 460.8 Kbps.
The original 4351 belongs to the Tricon v10.0 TCM generation and follows generation-specific slot and mixing rules.
TCMs occupy permitted logical communication slots in the Main Chassis or chassis 2, with left and right positions available for a matched pair.
Model 4351 cannot be installed in a system that also contains later 4351A, 4351B, 4352A, 4352B, 4353 or 4354 generations.
The TCM has no hot-spare feature, although a failed module can be replaced while the controller remains online.
The original 4351 is matched to Tricon v10.0. Later TCM suffixes correspond to later system versions and are not the same model. The complete model is important because 4352-family modules use fiber network interfaces instead of copper RJ-45 ports.
It has two copper 10/100BaseT Ethernet ports with RJ-45 connectors. Models in the 4352 line use fiber instead. Both links must still be configured for their assigned protocols; two connectors do not imply identical network roles.
No. The original 4351 generation cannot coexist with the later A/B or 4353/4354 TCM generation in one system. Generation mixing remains prohibited even when modules would occupy different chassis or different logical slots.
Serial port 4 supports either TriStation or Modbus. Port 1 can instead support Modbus or the Trimble GPS interface. The port assignment should therefore be checked before reusing an existing serial cable position.
Tricon programs use variable names, while Modbus messages use numeric addresses. The five-digit alias links each exposed variable to its Modbus message type and address. Without the alias, the external Modbus request has no confirmed numeric reference for the named controller variable.
No. TCM hot-spare operation is not available, even though an online replacement procedure exists for a failed module. Online replacement should be planned as a service action rather than assumed to provide uninterrupted standby communication.
