Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR ControlLogix Four-Port EtherNet/IP Communication Module

01

Product Details

Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR is a ControlLogix EtherNet/IP communication module that bridges the 1756 backplane to four copper Ethernet ports. It carries I/O ownership, controller messaging, motion traffic and engineering connections between chassis modules and the configured Ethernet network.

The four-port architecture of Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR supports switched topologies, including linear and Device Level Ring arrangements, without adding a separate switch at every chassis. Each network design must still account for connection totals, packet rate and the traffic reduction introduced when CIP Security integrity or confidentiality is enabled.

Installed in any supported ControlLogix chassis slot, Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR draws power from the backplane and keeps the Ethernet interfaces electrically isolated from the chassis bus. Module and port diagnostics distinguish a physical link problem from connection, ring or security-configuration issues.

Communication and Connectivity

Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR provides four Gigabit-capable chassis ports for I/O, messaging, motion and engineering traffic.

01

Four-port switching

The module can continue multiple copper links from one chassis and support a line or ring topology without a separate local switch.

02

Backplane bridge

Network packets addressed to local controllers or modules cross the 1756 backplane, while remote device traffic remains on Ethernet.

03

Security-aware throughput

CIP Security integrity and confidentiality protect traffic but lower the available packet rate, so the secure design must be sized from the secured value.

04

Diagnostics and Protection

Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR exposes module, port and network status so faults can be narrowed before connections are rebuilt.
01

Physical-link checks

Port indicators show whether the cable and link are active before addressing or I/O ownership is investigated.

02

Topology status

Ring and switch diagnostics reveal a broken DLR path or a topology change that still leaves an individual port linked.

03

Connection and security review

Module diagnostics separate exhausted connections, packet load and security-policy mismatch from a simple cable fault.

05

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR show link activity while I/O remains disconnected?

Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR link activity confirms the physical Ethernet path, but addressing, ownership, electronic keying, connection limits or security policy can still block I/O.

How should packet capacity be sized for Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR with CIP Security?

Size Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR from the secured packet-rate value that matches integrity or confidentiality, not from the unsecured 50,000 packets/s figure.

Can Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR replace a chassis switch?

Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR provides four switched controller-network ports, but the plant topology, managed-switch functions and segmentation requirements determine whether external switching is still needed.

What should be recorded before replacing Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR?

Record Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR firmware, chassis slot, IP settings, ring role, port use, security policy and every connection path before removal.

Why does motion traffic matter when loading Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR?

Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR can support many coordinated axes, but motion update rates consume packet capacity alongside I/O, messaging and engineering traffic.

Which cable should be used with Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR?

Use 802.3-compliant shielded or unshielded Category 5e twisted-pair cable with Allen-Bradley 1756-EN4TR and follow the plant grounding and routing rules.
