ABB Leads Ecosystem Innovation! Ethernet-APL Enters a New Stage of Large-Scale, Standardized Industrial Implementation
2026-07-03

In the current era of rapid iteration in industrial AI and accelerated intelligent transformation of process industries, the stable, efficient, and standardized construction of underlying data links has become the core foundation for factories to achieve autonomous intelligent operation. For a long time, process industries have generally suffered from pain points such as data silos, high construction thresholds, and difficult operation and maintenance due to complex scenarios, numerous devices, and inconsistent protocols, hindering the large-scale advancement of digital upgrades. Recently, the first stop of the Ethernet-APL Technology Application Roadshow, jointly organized by ABB and Ethernet-APL ecosystem members, was held in Ningbo, Zhejiang. A series of significant achievements were made, marking the official departure of the fragmented pilot model for Ethernet-APL technology in China, and its full entry into a new stage of standardized, regulated, and large-scale implementation, laying a solid foundation for digital transformation in process industries such as chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

I. National Roadshow Kicks Off, Focusing on Essential Needs for Industrial Implementation
This Ningbo event is the first major event in a three-part national roadshow on Ethernet-APL technology applications. Jointly organized by ABB, its ecosystem members, and authoritative media platforms in the process industry, it precisely focuses on the practical pain points and essential needs of frontline engineering projects in the process industry. The event brings together leading end-user companies, design institutes, and system integrators from the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. With a focus on sharing practical case studies, dissecting complete technical solutions, and facilitating collaborative exchanges within the industry ecosystem, it establishes a high-level platform for technical exchange and experience sharing.

Compared to past industry technical conferences that emphasized theoretical popularization, this roadshow focuses on practical engineering implementation, building upon and refining the outcomes of the 2025 Ethernet-APL Industry Conference. The conference content comprehensively covers the entire project lifecycle, from early planning and design, system architecture selection, to on-site construction and deployment, equipment commissioning, and long-term operation and maintenance, forming a complete technical guidance system. This thoroughly solves the core problems of fragmented technology implementation and lack of practical standards in the industry, clearing practical obstacles for the widespread adoption of the technology.

II. Industry's First Selection Manual Released, Unifying and Standardizing Application System
The most significant industry breakthrough of this event was the release of the "Ethernet-APL Product Selection Manual" by all ecosystem members, filling a gap in standardized selection within the domestic APL industry. Previously, the selection of Ethernet-APL equipment in China lacked unified standards, with significant differences in product parameters and compatibility standards among different manufacturers. This resulted in cumbersome selection processes for design institutes, high system integration difficulties, and exorbitant project implementation costs, severely limiting the large-scale promotion of the technology.

The newly released selection manual precisely targets three core groups: design institutes, end-users, and system integrators, establishing a unified, standardized, and authoritative product selection reference system. The manual clarifies the applicable scenarios, technical parameters, selection logic, and compatibility standards for various APL devices, effectively simplifying the equipment selection process and lowering the overall threshold for engineering design, equipment procurement, and system integration, making the implementation of Ethernet-APL technology more efficient, standardized, and controllable. Simultaneously, various ecosystem companies released the latest iterations of their APL product series, continuously enriching the product matrix, improving industry support, and further solidifying the foundation for the large-scale development of the ecosystem.

III. Deepening Understanding of Practical Engineering Challenges and Providing Full-Cycle Technical Solutions

To effectively address industry implementation challenges, this seminar focused on in-depth analysis of mainstream technical routes and engineering pain points, delivering readily implementable complete technical solutions. Core topics included in-depth analysis of the PROFINET over Ethernet-APL mainstream technical route, APL-compatible system architecture selection logic, standardized system integration methods, and practical specifications for the entire process of on-site construction, commissioning, and operation and maintenance, comprehensively covering the core aspects of process industry project implementation.

As a new generation of two-wire industrial Ethernet technology, Ethernet-APL boasts core advantages such as 10Mbps high-speed transmission, intrinsic safety, and simple cabling. It can operate stably in complex industrial scenarios such as flammable and explosive environments, while simultaneously achieving dual-wire integration of equipment communication and power supply, significantly simplifying on-site cabling and construction processes. The seminar, drawing on the mature implementation experience of BASF's Zhanjiang integrated base global benchmark project, visually demonstrated the application value of APL technology in large-scale process industry projects, providing replicable and implementable practical models for the intelligent construction of new plants and the digital transformation of existing plants, helping companies significantly improve project delivery efficiency and long-term equipment operational stability.

IV. Ecosystem Collaboration to Accelerate Industry-Wide Adoption

The large-scale deployment of Ethernet-APL technology relies on the collaborative empowerment of the entire industry chain. This series of seminars adhered to an open and collaborative industry philosophy, linking upstream and downstream resources across the entire industry chain to pool ecosystem resources and drive technological iteration and scenario implementation. Each ecosystem member company performed its respective duties and complemented each other, building a complete industry service loop from product development, standard setting, and technology empowerment to engineering implementation.

Fan Xiaopeng, Vice President of ABB and Head of Energy Industries Business in China, stated that the rapid development of industrial AI has made stable and reliable on-site data the core lifeline for the autonomous intelligent operation of factories. This series of seminars is an important initiative by ABB to empower the innovation and upgrading of China's process industries in collaboration with ecosystem partners. In the future, ABB will continue to uphold the open philosophy, deepen industry chain collaboration, and continuously promote the localization, popularization, and iterative upgrading of Ethernet-APL technology, providing comprehensive support for the large-scale deployment of industrial intelligent projects.

V. Continuous Empowerment Across the Entire Industry, Ushering in a New Intelligent Future for Process Industries
The successful conclusion of the Ningbo event has laid a solid foundation for the national tour seminar series and marks the official entry of the domestic Ethernet-APL industry into a new development track of standardization, normalization, and large-scale development. Subsequent tour sessions will be held in major core production areas of the process industries across the country, continuously delivering mature technical solutions, practical engineering experience, and high-quality ecosystem resources.

From scattered pilot projects to nationwide adoption, Ethernet-APL technology, with its core advantages of high efficiency, stability, security, and ease of deployment, has completely opened up the end-to-end data link in the process industries, breaking down traditional data silos and building a solid data foundation for the digital, intelligent, and autonomous operation of factories. With the continuous improvement of industry standards, the enrichment of product matrices, and the accumulation of engineering experience, Ethernet-APL will become the core infrastructure for the intelligent transformation of the process industries, helping more local industrial enterprises achieve cost reduction, efficiency improvement, quality upgrading, and empowering high-quality development of the industrial sector.
