Horner HE800WCM802 / HE800WCM900 Wireless Communication Modems

Product Overview

The HE800WCM802 and HE800WCM900 are SmartStack Wireless Communication OEM RF Modems from Horner Automation. They provide wireless serial communication links, transferring asynchronous serial data streams over-the-air between devices using frequency hopping spread spectrum technology.

The HE800WCM802 operates on the 2.4 GHz ISM band with up to 600 ft indoor range and up to 3 miles outdoor line-of-sight with dipole antenna. The HE800WCM900 operates on the 900 MHz ISM band with up to 1,500 ft indoor range and up to 7 miles outdoor line-of-sight with dipole antenna.

Both modules must be connected to the OCS/RCS RS-232 port using an external cable; serial data is not accessed through the backplane of the OCS/RCS. The WCM802 and WCM900 modules are not compatible with each other and cannot communicate with one another.

Configuration & Installation

The HE800WCM802 and HE800WCM900 connect to the OCS/RCS RS-232 port using an external null-modem cable. Serial data is not accessed through the backplane of the OCS/RCS. When connecting a WCM802 to a PC, power is provided by mounting the WCM900 to a FOX104 base, which functions strictly as a power supply and mounting platform.

The antenna is directly connected to the SmartStack module or can be connected via an external cable. For the WCM900, an antenna kit is required if mounting outdoors, as the standard articulating antenna is not suitable for outdoor use. The included antenna and optional antenna kits do not satisfy the antenna requirements for all applications.

The modules operate in five modes: Idle Mode, Transmit Mode, Receive Mode, Command Mode, and Sleep Mode. During Transmit Mode, the module initializes a communications channel, sends an RF initializer to synchronize receiving modules, then groups data into packets (up to 64 bytes each) for transmission.

FAQ

Can the HE800WCM802 and HE800WCM900 communicate with each other?
No. The WCM802 (2.4 GHz) and WCM900 (900 MHz) modules are not compatible with each other and cannot be used to communicate with one another.
What is the difference in range between the HE800WCM802 and HE800WCM900?
The HE800WCM900 offers longer range with up to 1,500 ft indoor and up to 7 miles outdoor line-of-sight with dipole antenna. The HE800WCM802 provides up to 600 ft indoor and up to 3 miles outdoor line-of-sight with dipole antenna.
How is the HE800WCM802 or HE800WCM900 connected to the host controller?
Both modules must be connected to the OCS/RCS RS-232 port using an external null-modem cable. Serial data is not accessed through the backplane of the OCS/RCS. Maximum cable length is 50 feet (15.24 meters).
What network topologies does the HE800WCM802 or HE800WCM900 support?
The modules support peer-to-peer (no master required), point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, and multidrop network topologies. They also feature retries and acknowledgements for reliable data delivery.
What are the power requirements for the HE800WCM802 or HE800WCM900?
During transmit, the module requires 0.8 W (33 mA @ 24 VDC). During receive, it requires 0.3 W (13 mA @ 24 VDC). In power down mode, consumption drops to 50 μW (2 μA @ 24 VDC).
