Provides 8K EPROM when installed in the CPU. In the documented ASCII/BASIC application it provides 24K EPROM for permanent program storage and is programmed while installed in that module.
GE Fanuc IC655MEM512 / IC655MEM513 Series Five EPROM Memory Cartridges
Two removable program-memory cartridges presented together to clarify their capacity and register-configuration differences.
One Controller Platform, Two Memory Configurations
IC655MEM512 and IC655MEM513 are removable Series Five CPU memory cartridges. Both retain the user logic program and controller I/O configuration in nonvolatile UV-erasable EPROM and fit the guided cartridge slot behind the CPU's large hinged front door, immediately beside the 8-pin OIU connector.
At each power-up, the CPU loads the stored program and configuration from the installed cartridge. CPU data registers are held separately on the CPU board, so the cartridge catalog number and the installed register-memory hardware must be treated as related but distinct configuration choices.
Both cartridges store user source and compiled code, I/O assignment and configuration maps, watchdog configuration, CCM identification and parity, password data and internal constants. Both draw operating power from the controller's internal +5 VDC supply.
Provides 16K EPROM and is supplied with a separate 16K RAM device used to expand CPU data-register capacity from the standard 4K arrangement to 16K.
Common Specifications, Then Model Differences
What Returns to the CPU at Power-Up
Installed EPROM cartridge
Series Five CPU
The saved information is loaded into the CPU at every power-up so the controller can reconstruct the stored program and operating configuration.
Register data follows a different path
Data registers reside in RAM on the CPU board rather than in the removable EPROM cartridge.
This separation is especially important for IC655MEM513 because its 16K program cartridge is paired with a distinct CPU register-expansion procedure.
CPU Register-Memory Expansion
Remove power and open the CPU side cover
Take off the rectangular cover on the left side of the CPU case before working at the RAM socket.
Install the 16K register RAM
Remove the 5165P-70 device and carefully insert the supplied 5256P-70 RAM with the correct orientation and no bent pins.
Set the expansion jumper
Move the jumper to the two pins closest to EXPAND, confirm firm seating, and replace the side cover.
IC655MEM512 / IC655MEM513 FAQ
How does an IC655MEM512 / IC655MEM513 copy operation differ from copying RAM or EEPROM?
An EPROM installed in the CPU is not written like a RAM or EEPROM cartridge. For an EPROM copy operation, place the EPROM in the OIU. The documented ASCII/BASIC use is the exception in which IC655MEM512 is programmed while installed in that module.
What must be done before reusing a nonblank IC655MEM512 / IC655MEM513?
The existing UV-EPROM contents must be erased with ultraviolet equipment before a new program can be copied. This is different from clearing a writable cartridge or removing its write protection.
Can IC655MEM512 / IC655MEM513 alone preserve the live CPU register values?
No. The cartridges retain program and configuration information, while data registers reside in separate RAM on the CPU board. Record any required register values through the controller's supported data-handling process before hardware replacement.
When is IC655MEM513 not a direct physical substitute for IC655MEM512?
IC655MEM513 requires the documented 16K CPU register RAM and expansion-jumper arrangement when the expanded register configuration is used. A cartridge change without checking that CPU hardware does not complete the IC655MEM513 configuration.
What should be verified after installing IC655MEM512 / IC655MEM513 in another Series Five CPU?
Confirm that the saved user program and CPU configuration belong to the intended machine, then verify the installed I/O assignment and configuration before returning the controller to operation. The cartridge reloads these stored settings at power-up.
