Welcome to Moore Automation Limited
In power plants and chemical facilities running Bailey INFI 90 systems, there is a failure mode that operators dread more than a controller trip: the moment every temperature, pressure, and flow reading on the operator station freezes or goes blank — not because the process has stopped, but because one card deep inside the cabinet has stopped talking.
That card is the INICT13A. In ABB Bailey INFI 90 architecture, it serves as the Infi-Net to Computer Transfer module — the bridge between the control network and the plant's supervisory computers. The original unit is no longer in production. ABB's recommended successor is the SPICT13A, but the installed base of legacy systems continues to generate replacement demand.
To understand why a single card can stall an entire data flow, you need to understand the INFI 90 architecture.
In an INFI 90 system, field controllers — such as the IMMFP01 — execute the actual control logic. They read temperature, pressure, valve position, and other process variables through I/O modules, then run PID loops and logic sequences. But that data stays on the INFI-NET control bus, speaking Bailey's proprietary protocol at 1 Mbps over dual redundant coaxial or fiber links.
The INICT13A sits between INFI-NET and the supervisory layer. On one side, it connects to the control network. On the other, it provides a SCSI high-speed parallel port or RS-232 serial interface to the operator station, historian, or plant computer. It packages process data for upload and passes operator commands back down to the controllers.

The INICT13A discontinuation did not happen overnight. As ABB migrated the Bailey product line toward Symphony Plus and System 800xA, the INICT13A was classified as obsolete. The official migration path points to the SPICT13A, designed for the Symphony Plus platform.
But a substantial installed base of INFI 90 systems remains in service across power generation, refining, and water treatment. Many of these systems were commissioned in the 2000s and are still running today. The result is a persistent supply-demand mismatch: the original manufacturer has stopped production, but installed systems still need replacements.
Today's supply comes from three channels: new surplus stock, professionally tested refurbished units, and de-installed modules from retired systems. Industry sources note that the secondary market for INFI 90 hardware is tightening year by year, making verification of incoming spares a discipline in itself.
Based on field experience, INICT13A-related communication faults typically present in three forms:
When an INICT13A fails or spare stock runs dry, plants typically face a choice between two strategies.
Path One: Maintain the status quo with like-for-like replacement. This suits facilities that do not plan a full system upgrade in the near term. The main challenge is sourcing. New surplus INICT13A inventory is limited, and overseas lead times can exceed 40 days. For a 24/7 production line, that wait is often unacceptable.
Path Two: Accelerate system migration. Gradually upgrade the INFI 90 platform to Symphony Plus or System 800xA. ABB's recommended migration uses the SPICT13A as a transitional replacement. A full migration involves controllers, I/O, and the operator layer, so investment and outage windows must be planned carefully.
One recent example illustrates the stakes. A 25+ MW biomass energy plant in North America operated a Bailey INFI 90 powerhouse Balance of Plant control system alongside a GE Mark III turbine control system. The facility upgraded to a Rockwell PlantPAx DCS to achieve unified control and reduce maintenance costs. The upgrade was completed with a total plant outage limited to three weeks — a timeline that required pre-outage control logic testing and careful coordination with plant personnel. The project demonstrates that migration is feasible, but requires disciplined planning.
The original manufacturer has discontinued it, but channel inventory still circulates, including new surplus and professionally tested refurbished units. Availability fluctuates, so confirm stock status early.
The SPICT13A is ABB's recommended successor, designed for the Symphony Plus platform. When used in an INFI 90 system, hardware revision and system compatibility must be verified. A small-scale test before full deployment is strongly advised.
The controller and I/O layer usually continue running the process. However, the supervisory interface goes completely dark — operators cannot see real-time data or issue remote commands. For processes that depend on central monitoring, this is effectively a loss of control.
Some third-party suppliers offer compatible protocol gateway modules. However, compatibility with the existing INFI-NET bus, data refresh rate, and redundancy failover must be carefully evaluated. Validate on non-critical loops first.
